ON DR KISSINGER’S SECRET VISIT TO CHINA, JULY 1971.

| Just as when one lifts the cover of human social life and discovers that, instead of the absolutes such as truth and honesty one expects to see, there are merely undesirable relatives, a closer deeper scrutiny of international politics - whether at a provincial or national level, between political parties or between nations or even superpowers – reveals that it is not policies or issues that matter. In the end, it comes down to personalities and the human interplay between them. |
| When the Big Three – Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin – met in 1945 at Yalta to decide the future of the postwar world, the state of Roosevelt’s failing health, rather than the incipient and predictable confirmation between capitalism and communism, proved to be a determining factor in the quality of his negotiations with the robust Stalin. To some, the cultural revolution in China in the two years between 1966 and 1968 was less to do with the ideological pretension of the Gang of Four, led by the redoubtable Chiang Ching, than to the individual idiosyncrasy of her septuagenarian husband Chairman Mao Tse-tung.
