BOOK REVIEW on THE BOOK ON BUSH: How George W. Bush (mis)leads the World, and NEVER SURRRENDER: A Novel of One Man's Defiance and a Nation's Courage.
|
| Certain novels read like history, and certain histories like novels. Two recent books on two wars – one on the Second World War and the other on the ongoing war between the First World and the Third World - share that property. The first – Michael Dobb’s Never Surrender – is a novel, subtitled the defiance of one man (Winston Churchill) and the courage of a nation (Great Britain). The second is Eric Alterman and Mark Green’s joint authorship The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)leads America. |
| Over seventy years separate the times dominated by the half-American but wholly British prime minister Winston S. Churchill and the all-American President George W. Bush. Had they been contemporaries and able to look each other in the eye, they might not have been able to detect any similarity between themselves at all. And yet, seen together through the prism of history, they are more alike than either of them might perhaps have been prepared to acknowledge. [EXTRACT] |
