| THE DEVI MAHATMYA IN PAHARI PAINTING |
PAPER READ AT COLLOQUIUM ON PAHARI PAINTING, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California, USA, 10 Sept. 1977.
|
The subject of my paper is The Devi Mahatmya in Pahari Painting. The cue for this I have taken from Dr Ananda Coomaraswamy's advice published just over 50 years ago. 'We need not,' he had written, 'disdain to study in some detail the subject matter of Rajput painting, since all the virtue it possesses arose from the painters' passionate belief in the grandeur of their themes.' He cautioned that 'a positive lack of sympathy with Hindu thought must seriously handicap any student of Hindu art', just as Bernard Berenson would have deplored an ignorance of Christianity in anyone proposing to study Italian Renaissance painting.
